PCVR vs Quest for Beat Saber: Which Should You Choose?

Trying to decide between PCVR and Quest for Beat Saber? Compare graphics, modding, battery life, portability, recording, and more to choose the right platform for you.

If you're a new player getting into Beat Saber (or thinking about upgrading your setup) you're probably asking the same question I did:

Should I play on PCVR or Quest?

The short answer?

Both are great.

The longer answer?

They each excel at different things, and after spending plenty of time playing on both, I've found that the "best" platform really depends on how you play Beat Saber.

Whether you're chasing leaderboard scores, making YouTube videos, mapping custom songs, or just looking to get a quick workout in, this guide will help you decide which platform fits you best.

Quick Answer

If you just want my quick recommendation:

Choose Quest if you:

    • Want to play anywhere
    • Value convenience
    • Prefer wireless gameplay
    • Mostly play casually

Choose PCVR if you:

    • Want the best graphics
    • Plan to heavily mod the game
    • Create Beat Saber content
    • Want longer play sessions

Still not sure? Let's compare them.

Graphics

Winner: PCVR

This one isn't particularly close. Running Beat Saber on a gaming PC allows for higher resolution, better lighting, sharper textures, and generally cleaner visuals.

Does that make you play better? Not really. But it looks fantastic.

Quest still looks great, but the standalone headset has to make compromises to keep everything running smoothly.

If visuals matter to you, PCVR is the clear winner.

Modding

Winner: Both

If you enjoy custom songs, custom sabers, camera tools, mapping, or experimenting with community mods, PCVR gives you significantly more options.

Most new mods arrive on PC first, and some never make it to Quest at all.

Quest supports modding too, but it's naturally more limited due to the hardware and platform restrictions.

If you're the kind of person who sees a new Beat Saber mod and immediately thinks, "I need to try that," you'll probably be happier on PC.

That being said, PC modding does take a few extra steps to get right while modding on Quest is a little more straightforward.

If you’re comfortable navigating your file explorer, PC is the way to go.

If not, Quest might be better for you.

Portability

Winner: Quest

This is where Quest absolutely shines.

Want to play in your living room? A friend's house? A hotel? Your backyard? (Maybe check for trees first.)

Quest doesn't care.

Put the headset on, draw your boundary, and you're ready to play in seconds. No cables. No gaming PC. No wondering whether Windows decided today was the day to update your graphics drivers.

For convenience, Quest is hard to beat.

Battery Life

Winner: PCVR

One thing that surprised me after switching between the two was just how much longer I could play on PCVR.

When connected with a Link Cable, the headset slowly charges while you play. That means I can usually get somewhere around 4–6 hours before needing a break.

On Quest standalone? Heavy modded sessions usually leave me hunting for a charger after 1–2 hours.

If your Beat Saber sessions tend to turn into "just one more map" for two hours straight, this difference becomes pretty noticeable.

If you typically play for longer sessions, PCVR is the way to go.

Recording & Streaming

Winner: PCVR

If you're planning to create YouTube videos, stream on Twitch, or record gameplay for social media, PCVR has a huge advantage.

You'll have access to:

    • Better camera tools
    • More recording options
    • Higher quality footage
    • More customization

You can record on Quest, but if content creation is part of your plan, PCVR makes life much easier.

Reliability

Winner: It Depends

Quest wins for simplicity as it boots quickly and usually just works.

PCVR gives you more flexibility...but occasionally reminds you that computers enjoy creating new and exciting problems. OpenXR errors. SteamVR acting weird. A cable deciding today is retirement day.

Most of the time everything works perfectly. But when something goes wrong, troubleshooting a PC can take longer than simply putting on a Quest headset.

Which Version Should You Buy?

Buy a Quest copy if...

    • Beat Saber is your first VR game.
    • You value convenience over maximum graphics.
    • You travel often.
    • You mainly play casually.
    • You don't already own a gaming PC.

For most people, Quest is the easiest way to enjoy Beat Saber.

Beat Saber on Steam

Buy a PCVR copy if...

    • You already own a capable gaming PC.
    • You love modding games.
    • You plan to map custom songs.
    • You create YouTube or Twitch content.
    • You want the best possible visual experience.

My Personal Recommendation

After spending a lot of time on both platforms... I don't think there's a wrong choice.

When I want to sit down and map songs, test mods, or record videos, I'm almost always on PCVR. But when I just want to throw on a headset and play a few songs without thinking about cables or software, Quest is incredibly hard to beat.

If I could only own one? I'd probably choose based on what I wanted to do outside of playing.

For creating content and mapping, I'd pick PCVR every time.

For pure convenience, Quest wins hands down.

Yes. Running Beat Saber on a gaming PC allows for higher graphical settings, sharper visuals, and more customization than Quest standalone.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, the best headset is the one that gets you playing. I've had some of my favorite Beat Saber sessions on PCVR... and some on Quest.

The important part isn't whether your headset has the highest resolution or the fanciest mods. It's that you're having fun slicing blocks. Everything else is just a bonus.
